Who doesn’t love a little flattery now and then? We look forward to making your adoption experience as pleasant as theirs!
“We fell in love with Felines & Canines when they were at their temporary location on Peterson Avenue. We would stop in once a week to play with the cats and talk with the staff, eventually coming to the conclusion we need a new family member.

“My husband and I adopted our first dog, Crede, after seeing him in the window at Animal Care Center in the West Loop about three years ago (little did we know Felines & Canines uses that incredible vet clinic for all their rescues — small world.) We lived in our condo at the time in Uptown, but our dream was to buy a single family home with a yard for Crede to run around in.

“When we finally made the decision to get a dog, my boyfriend and I knew we wanted to adopt – that was a no brainer. The question, however, was where? Chicago is full of so many amazing shelters that we didn’t know where to begin, so we chose one and went with it. Everyone I knew had told me that when adopting an animal, you just know when you know. After trying two shelters, and meeting with a couple dogs, we just didn’t have that feeling of love that we were desperate for.”

“I adopted my grey short haired domestic cat, Nelson, earlier this year. I volunteered a few times at Felines & Canines, wanting to help and spend time with animals. I had no intention to adopt. My first day, I worked in the cat room, and I was amazed by the beautiful environment Felines & Canines had created for the kitties. It was such a bright, open, inviting room for them to roam around and play in.

“Felines & Canines was my savior. I was having a really tough time finding the perfect pet and it seemed like I was getting my hopes up left and right by phony breeders and big name store adoption sites. Until finally I found Felines & Canines.

“Our first experience with F&C was when my sister, Alba, adopted Kedzie, a beautiful dark brown pit bull mix. The staff was caring and really wanted to make sure that both my sister and Kedzie (formerly known as Hershey) were a successful match.

“Thank you so much for matching me with my Bubba-bear! You listened to what I was looking for and knew your dogs so well to show me Tucker. I knew the minute he walked through the door that he was the one for me.
– Erika & Tucker
“Lulu and Tater Tot were born at Felines & Canines June 2014 along with five other siblings. Shortly after their birth, their momma tragically passed away from an existing condition. After her passing, the F&C team rallied behind these puppies to make sure they were healthy, happy and loved.

“Felines & Canines is a magical place. Abby and Kelly sprinkle magic dust on all the cats and dogs and then watch the magic happen! In our case, Mercy was considered a “semi-feral” who had lived at the shelter for 6 years. She wasn’t the friendliest of cats and so stayed behind as other cats were adopted. At any other shelter, she would have been the cat languishing sadly in a cage. Not at F&C, though. She roamed the upper floor freely and happily.
–Lori & Mercy
“I am such a big supporter of F&C. I found out about you guys through my sister Annie back when she adopted a kitten about 9 years ago. Last year, I was prepared to adopt a beautiful golden retriever from a family that wasn’t sure they’d be able to keep her, and I really got my hopes up about it. When they ended up finding a solution, I was happy for the dog but also let down, because I had gotten really psyched to become a dog owner! That week, I started looking at pictures and descriptions of dogs at various shelters in Chicago.

“I am so incredibly grateful to have stumbled upon Felines & Canines last spring. This space is a breath of fresh air and has wonderful energy and animals inside! I had been searching for a rescue dog for some time and had visited a variety of shelters but had not found a pet nor staff I really vibed with. Upon entering Felines & Canines I found not only my best friend – but also, a staff who clearly love their jobs and who are beyond welcoming, kind, and knowledgeable.

“I love this facility. It is very nice that these cats are super social because of the layout of the shelter. The ladies that work there are very sweet and do a great job screening owners to see who you would be compatible with.
My cat Fezzik was able to spend time with a dog in the shelter where they were friends and could cuddle. Even now, being the only animal in my home he is still very social and greets people at the door. People love visiting him because he isn’t like “most cats” that don’t want anything to do with strangers and have many rules about being touched.
–Melissa & Fezzik
“My name is Andrew Zeiter, and I adopted a cat (Thumper, originally) from Felines & Canines about 2-3 months ago. My experience that day was beyond positive. I had recently had to put my cat down (Bernie) who had been with me for over 9 years.
-Andrew & Scully
“It was a long time ago (2006) when I adopted my beloved cats from Felines & Canines. I was healing from the loss of my first cat and came in looking for two females. As we were sitting on the floor of the room where these very shy girls were kept, we saw a black and white paw under the door.

“We cannot thank all of you, at Felines & Canines, enough for saving and then introducing us to our newest pack member — Mandy (formerly known as Bandi). There is no doubt that this little angel has found her forever home and we have found a truly, wonderful companion. In addition to that, Goldie (our pup adopted a few months ago) now has a lifelong playmate. Their chemistry was obvious at your office and their bond has only grown. They swim in the Fox River daily and have already explored numerous forest preserves, a state park and have been canoeing on Fox River.

I showed up one Saturday morning looking to adopt a 2 year old, 35 pound, terrier mix I had seen online. From what I read about him, he was exactly what I was looking for: over a year-old, 30ish pounds, and shaggy hair. Unfortunately for me he was exactly what someone else was looking for too and that pup had a new home.

We’re big fans of Felines & Canines for countless reasons, but the most important one is in this picture. Hazel lights up our lives and has made our family complete – our other dog, our kids, even our two persnickety cats love this sweet girl.
– The Sutton Family
We can not say thank you enough for the happiness that Porter has brought to our family in the last year! We had no idea how much adding a new family member would impact our lives. It is truly an incredible experience to watch a dog who we could tell was depressed from missing his family blossom and give his heart to us so completely.
– Lots of love, Melissa, Katie, & Porter
Thank you Felines & Canines for bringing this very special girl into our lives. Every morning I am grateful that you rescued her, and that I get to wake up to this sweet and smiley face! Sheba has been such a gift to our family. She is relentlessly cheerful, optimistic, and reminds us daily to let go of the small stuff.
